Vision Care Tips
Protect Your Eyes, Preserve Your Vision
Good vision is essential for learning, working, and enjoying everyday life. Many eye conditions can be prevented or managed effectively through healthy habits and regular eye examinations. The Bangladesh Optometric Society encourages everyone to adopt these simple practices to maintain lifelong eye health.
1. Schedule Regular Eye Examinations
Routine comprehensive eye examinations help detect vision problems and eye diseases early, often before symptoms appear. Children, adults, and older individuals should have their eyes checked according to their optometrist’s recommendations.
2. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
Extended use of digital devices can lead to digital eye strain. Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax your focusing muscles and reduce eye fatigue.
3. Protect Your Eyes from UV Radiation
Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays when outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection against harmful sunlight.
4. Eat a Vision-Friendly Diet
A balanced diet rich in leafy green vegetables, colourful fruits, fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, eggs, and whole grains supports healthy eyes and may reduce the risk of certain eye diseases.
5. Maintain Good Control of Health Conditions
Conditions such as diabetes and hypertension can affect eye health. Regular medical check-ups and proper management of these conditions are essential to protect your vision.
6. Practise Safe Contact Lens Care
Always wash your hands before handling contact lenses. Follow the recommended cleaning and replacement schedule, and never sleep in contact lenses unless advised by your eye care professional.
7. Stay Hydrated and Blink Frequently
Adequate water intake and conscious blinking, especially during screen use, help maintain a healthy tear film and reduce symptoms of dry eyes.
8. Avoid Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and damage to the optic nerve. Quitting smoking benefits both your eye health and overall well-being.
9. Use Protective Eyewear
Wear appropriate safety glasses or protective goggles during sports, household activities, and occupations that expose the eyes to potential injury.
10. Ensure Children Receive Vision Screening
Good vision is vital for a child’s educational development and social growth. Early detection and management of vision problems can significantly improve learning outcomes.
11. Get Adequate Sleep
Quality sleep allows the eyes to rest and recover, helping to reduce eye strain, dryness, and fatigue.
12. Seek Professional Advice Promptly
Do not ignore symptoms such as sudden vision loss, flashes of light, persistent redness, eye pain, double vision, or sudden onset of floaters. Seek immediate professional eye care when these warning signs occur.
Your Vision Matters
Healthy eyes contribute to a healthier, more productive life. By adopting simple preventive measures and prioritising regular eye examinations, we can reduce avoidable visual impairment and preserve sight for future generations.
